Because it sounds like translator. Say them back to back: alligator, translator. Once you hear it, you can’t un-hear it.

No alligators were consulted. They’re great listeners, though.

Private by design

Alligator has no servers of its own, no accounts and no tracking. It doesn’t keep anything you say.

Nothing is recorded or saved. Conversations exist only on your screen. Close Alligator and they’re gone, unless you choose Save transcript, which downloads a file to your own device.
Audio goes straight to Soniox. Your browser sends speech directly to Soniox, the service that transcribes and translates it. It never passes through Alligator. Soniox says it doesn’t store live audio or transcripts and never uses them to train its models.
Your key and settings stay on this device. Your Soniox API key and preferences (languages, view, theme) are kept in this browser only, so you don’t have to enter them again. Remove the key at any time in Options.
Open source. All of Alligator’s code is public on GitHub under the MIT License, so anyone can check these promises or run their own copy.

Your Soniox API key

Alligator uses Soniox to hear and translate speech. Paste your API key to connect your Soniox account.

How do I get a key?

Go to console.soniox.com and create an account, or sign in.
Open your project (new accounts start with My First Project) and choose API keys.
Click Create API key, name it something like “Alligator”, and turn on Full access.
Copy the key and paste it above. Soniox shows the full key only once.

Soniox bills your account for the time Alligator is listening, including while paused. You can see your usage and set a monthly budget in the Soniox Console.

Your key is saved only in this browser, on this device. Alligator sends it to Soniox and nowhere else.
